I think the one interesting aspect that could actually get the deal done is Texas wanting to join the Big Ten from an academic standpoint. Academic reputation is very important to any state and the state of Texas has made it a priority to make the University of Texas a top notch University because of the massive benefits that it can bring to the states economy. Texas in fact over the last fifteen years started poaching professors from Big Ten schools by offering higher salaries. The Big Ten is besides the Ivy League probably the top notch association of academic schools in the country, it could be argued that the economic impact to the state of Texas could be far more from the increased academic reputation than whatever extra money ended up at the athletic department. The Longhorns already supposedly make the most money in the NCAA so the money from the Big Ten Network isn't enough incentive to join.
