Final Score 68-61
Leading scorer Marcus Landry 23 Points

The UW Badgers Marcus Landry had a career type night to start the 2008-2009 season against Long Beach State. Landry helped the Badgers score a 68 to 61 victory over Long Beach that was closer than the final score. Landry gave the Badgers everything he could in the game including blocked shots, hustle, emotion, and a career best scoring burst of 23 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. This is the perfect start to the year for Marcus after ending last year as the Big Ten Tournament's Most Outstanding Players, and an All Big Ten Preseason selection this year.
The Badgers now must find many other pieces to the puzzle before harder competition begins as Long Beach State gave the Badgers a good run for there money. In fact Long Beach State came closer to beating the Badgers in Madison than there coach Dan Munson did with his old Gophers squad. One of the ways that Long Beach State was able to fair so well against the Badgers is the lack of a tall and strong enough inside presence. The Badgers must find one of the younger players with size that can step up on the defensive end if they are going to have success. In addition the Badgers looked unsure of themselves on offense, again it looked like one of the younger players needs to step up to help the offense flow better. Sophomore big man Jon Leuer might be that guy as he played fifteen minutes and looked the most aggressive of the young players on offense scoring 7 points.
We all knew that freshman guard Jordan Taylor was not going to redshirt this year and he played 15 minutes in the game scoring 2 points. Joining him on the court was freshman forward Rob Wilson so he also will not be redshirting this year.
